Orthodontics has proven beneficial for patients of any age. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in adults seeking orthodontic treatment. In fact, 25% of all our patients are adults.
In the past, most people believed only children could benefit from orthodontic treatment, but actually the tissue involved in the movement of teeth for children and adults are the same. While there might be some growth limitations in adult patients, these limitations can usually be overcome, there by providing an excellent result in our adult patients as well.
Spaces between the teeth, protruding front teeth and tipping of the teeth into a space from previously extracted teeth, can all be corrected with adult orthodontics.
The health aspect of orthodontics is often the primary consideration for adult treatment. Crooked teeth can put extra stress on supporting tissue Failure to correct the problem may induce a weakening of these supporting tissue, thereby causing gum disease, loss of teeth and eventually a need for dentures.
Another oral health concern for adults is eliminating or lessening the need for costly bridgework. Having the teeth straighten so that “natural” teeth fill in the spaces where teeth have been lost is a far better solution than artificial bridgework. However, in situations where bridgework is necessary, orthodontics can align the teeth in their most favorable positions for better fit and support.
